McHenry Hohnen 'Calgardup Brook' Chardonnay 2022
- TASTING NOTE: "For whatever reason, this just has the edge compared with its two other chardonnay siblings, which are both excellent. This just seems more high-toned, flinty, racy and linear. Yet it has texture, depth and super length. All the flavours come together seamlessly, the oak a mere seasoning, and moreish acidity ensures this is delicious now and will age well." 96 Points - Jane Faulkner, Halliday Wine Companion
- ABOUT THE WINE: This parcel of fruit is sourced from Calgardup Brook. This vineyard lies just inland from the coast. Its sandy, schisty soils are well weathered. These chardonnay vines run east-west with a slightly sloping northern aspect. To retain berry integrity the fruit was picked and gently transferred by gravity into vertical stone fermenters with no temperature control. Extraction was soft and fermentation carried out by the native yeast specific of this vineyard. After three weeks on skins the wine was softly pressed to French oak barriques, 40% of which were new. The wine was then matured in cool underground cellars for 16 months before being racked and bottled after a coarse filtration.
- ABOUT THE PRODUCER: "We aim to manage our vineyards sustainability using a range of practices that are not only ecologically sound, but also economically viable and socially responsible. All our viticultural practices nurture the biodiversity both within the soil microbiology that surrounds the vines and the insects and animals which are attracted to the healthy crops. McHenry Hohnen's vineyards are managed using 100% biodynamic methods which are designed to improve the vitality and health of the soil." McHenry Hohnen
